Natural hair movement in the UK can be traced back to the 1970s when natural hair movement was at its peak, fuelled by the rise of Black Power and the civil rights movement in the US. In fact, the black hair industry at the moment is worth £88 million, with black women spending six times more on their hair care than their white counterparts. One such brand that has listened to the cry of the afro hair community is Pantene. In 2019, the company released its Gold series which is a range of high-quality afro hair care products free from harmful chemicals like silicone, sulphates and paraben. The products were developed by 40 hairstylists, 11 PhD scientists and a dermatologist of who are all blacks. In addition, notable UK hair company, ORS has also launched a new range of hair repair products that are aimed at women of colour with afro-textured hair in London. Although the black hair care industry is a thriving one, it is only 5 per cent of the total hair care and beauty market. Therefore, there is need for more research, advert promotion and product development in order to boost the market.
